FT: Maya Silverberg & Flo Bracey
In his writings, Walter Benjamin often returned to fragments, to the debris of history that survives disaster. Not as whole narratives, but as scraps, traces and offcuts. He saw in these remnants both ruin and possibility: the residue of what has been, and the raw matter for what is still to come.
Maya Silverberg's work spans painting, wooden sculpture, silkscreen printmaking, collage, and digital photography. Each material encountered touches on stories of trade and craft, structures that carry the memory of their function whilst becoming something new. Harnessing her background in trompe l’œil, Silverberg also works to examine paintings status as both ne and decorative art. By weaving trade and craftsmanship into her practice, Maya transforms material remnants into carriers of layered stories.
On the floor, Flo Bracey develops her own lexicon of discarded objects, arranging them into a landscape. Found amongst corporate construction rubble, Bracey’s trove shimmers briey, forming images that threaten to vanish even as they appear, both evidence and illusion, present yet already edging toward disappearance. The installation extends her ongoing exploration of consumer goods and material residues as artefacts of the present. Together, the works establish a dialogue between the vertical and horizontal, found and manufactured. Above and below, scraps and traces, they hold in common what Benjamin called the “spoils” of the present: material remains that glimmer, just before slipping away.
Flo Bracey (b. 2000) attended Kingston School of Art (2018), Glasgow School of Art (2019-2021) and Conditions Studio Programme (2024-2025).
